Welcome to our blender tutorial series. blender is an amazing tool for 3D content-creation. It is highly customizable and flexible and Once you understand how to use it efficiently, you can get very productive with it.

This tutorial covers the installation of blender on Windows-XP but the installation-process should be similar for any of the supported operating-systems. So, let us fetch the software now!

You find the download-link to the newest blender-version directly on the blender main page. On the subsequent download page you find binary-distributions for Windows, Linux, Mac, and others. Let us choose the Version for windows-xp with 32 bit
since this is the operating system on which we are going to install blender. You will be asked to store the installation-file to your local disk and after your download has finished you just need to locate the executable and execute it by double-click.

The Installation is really no problem at all. You simply press the return key all the time. The default settings for blender will work in most cases. But here i will install blender at my personal file-space instead of the default-location.

You can use any location you want you only need to take care that you got about 40 Mega-Bytes of space on your hard disk.

After you have specified your destination directory the installer will ask you where you want to place your user data files. You have 3 different options.

I will select the secnd option. Now blender places all user-data directly into the installation directory. But caution here! You may loose parts of your personal data when you decide to upgrade or reinstall blender.

So, lets finish the installation now and start working:
The blender-program-icon is located right on your desktop. After starting blender you see the blender default-screen. Hidden behind the default-screen you find the blender console-window. The console gives you important information about your installation.

  1. which version of python does blender use ?
  2. is this python version available on your computer ?

Here blender tells us that it could not find the correct python-installation. But since blender already includes a minimal python installation most of blender’s functionality is always available out-of-the-box.

If you have the correct version of python installed on your computer and if blender can find it, it will make use of it instead of the build-in version. And it will give you an appropriate note on the console.

We could start blender now and begin working with it. But in the subsequent tutorials we will work with primstar an add-on for the creation of second life sculpted prims. This add-on needs a full python-installation. So please stop blender for now, install the python-version mentioned on the console and finally restart blender and check again on the console if blender uses it.

Here you see the console output after python has been installed.

Now blender can use the full power of python. After installing blender you can immediately jump start into your blender art work creation. But before you start, i recommend to take a look into the basic customization-tutorial. There i show you how to configure your personal scripts-folder for blender add-on scripts.

Enjoy blender and See you later!

I installed the Jass 2 and open blender fine. But then I do the tutorial for the Hat add the cylinder and the go to edit and I crash. Ive unistalled and reinstalled 2 times with the same results

CPU: Intel Pentium III core (unknown model, 0.18 micron process) with internal L2 cache (2666 MHz)
    Memory: 3063 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Windows Graphics Driver Version: 7.15.0010.0127

    • Is there any more information about the crash available ? for example a microsoft error code or any other hint about what exactly failed ? Without knowing more details i could just guess. People have reported they got problems when they used “memory boosters” (whatever that is). Mostly such errors where caused by broken memory cards and/or illegal driver versions. Have you also checked the blender forums about your error ? Often you find valuable hints on their forum pages. http://blender.org … forums

Ha! I bought your Jass-Pro, and it worked like a charm. It was well worth the 2000 L. Thank you!

I have downloaded and installed Blender. However, I do not seem able to install any version of Python. Whenever I try, I get “Error 2203″ and the installation aborts. I am using Windows 7 with 6 gig of memory. I have tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit installers and get the same result on both. I have tried version 2.6.6, 2.7, and 3.1 and get the same result. I cannot seem to find any further information on this problem on the internet. I hope you can help me.

Help. I can’t install Blender. I get an error message about the side by side configuration is incorrect. I have never had this problem before and this is a reinstall so that I could get the scripts folder in the same place as this tutorial. Now, I have lost Blender. I downloaded the 64 bit version, extracted to the same folder that had the zipped file and clicked on the exe file. I got the message if I wanted to run, I said yes, then I get the error message..grrr. Can some one help me please, I sure need it.

  • If you want to do a jump start without bothering with python and primstar, you still can use JASS. JASS is a ready made binary distribution which contains everything you need to start. It is blender and it has the needed add on scripts already installed with it. We still distribute the JASS-1.4 release (which you also can find on this blog at http://blog.machinimatrix.org/jass Right now it has become a bit outdated but it still serves its purpose. At least it helps you to jump start.

But if you want to wait for another couple of weeks, you will find JASS-2.0 here, which will contain blender-2.49, primstar, all necessary python modules and maybe some add on scripts and more enhancements. It will again be a binary “Install and play” jump start distributionl. Expect us to be ready end of february.

your videos are very nice – but i am lost sometimes. I have been trying to make sculpties for two months. They do not work for me.

Can you help me understand how to get Blender to use Python to export and import – this has never worked for me, and I can not find where to find Python or how to use it??

Beautiful tutorials very useful for beginers. everithing is correct .many time i reinstall Blender and i was asked if i want to remove my script folder or not
The best installation is a seperate folder in the BLender application data directory where you can keep everything you need even custumised icons ,textures and materials plug ins, etc…

  • Audacious

Thank you for answering back so i can go to c/ drive and then program files and then blender and make a folder

    • Please consider to create your personal scripts-folder OUTSIDE of the blender installation folders. Your benefit will be that you can upgrade blender without loosing your scripts… Or you can install several versions of blender all using the same personal scripts-folder.

  • I say in the video:

“First, we are going to create a scripts directory on our file system. I will place it right into my 3d-tools directory”

So… Just create a fresh directory somewhere on your file system…
I show, how i do that and you can follw me in the video, how i actually create the directory on windows-xp with native windows tools. nothing special here.

    Does that help you ?

  • Audacious

Hiya i have one thing with the 1st video i got lost when she said istall your own script directory never said how to do that or where could you help please
